There is only one Clair’s Bed & Breakfast in Ladner BC, or anywhere for that matter. Known for excellence in unique, historic accommodations and 5-star chef’s breakfasts, it is unlikely you will find an experience like hers anywhere in the world, never mind BC. Canada.

It wasn’t Clair Oates’ intent to swap her busy 32-year career working in a law firm to open a B&B.
“In 2002, we were in Prince George and we couldn’t find a hotel room so we stayed in a B&B,” she explains. “The innkeeper was lovely and we just loved our stay… then my husband (Cliff Oates) told me I’d be a good innkeeper.”

After a morning coffee with a co-worker, telling him about her recent trip, he attempted to play a joke on Clair and posted an enlarged sales ad on her office door for Ladner’s historic Baker House. His joke backfired.

Originally built in 1922 for George Baker, his wife Ursula and six children, the Craftsman-style residence needed some tender loving care.

Clair fell in love with the residence. The Baker House boasts a gorgeous front porch, original woodwork, six rooms – each with private bathrooms – and several common rooms for reading, visiting, games or getting to know new friends. With a chef background and a keen eye for antiques, Clair knew she could convert the Baker House into a beautiful B&B.

In October 2003, Clair and Cliff bought it and lovingly made-over the 1922 home to its former glory; while adding a few 21st century modern necessities.
Clair created a stunning chef’s kitchen and named each room after a precious stone- Jade, Turquoise, Amber, Amethyst, Garnet and Peridot. All are uniquely different and showcase gorgeous antiques and interesting items handpicked by Clair herself.

SINCE 2004

Clair welcomed her first guests in February 2004. Since then, Clair’s Bed and Breakfast has played host to an Academy Award winning actor and legendary local restaurateur Bud Kanke and his wife Dottie, to name a few.
Clair’s breakfast is becoming just about as famous as the inn itself. Bright and early every morning, guests wake up to a home cooked breakfast like no other. Whether its fresh baked scones, banana spring roll, pear French toast or Eggs Bennie, guests rave about her culinary skills.
So good are Clair’s breakfasts’ that her West coast seafood eggs Bennie with crab made it on an episode of Flavours of the West Coast.

Yet, it’s not just the living atmosphere that sets Clair’s Bed and Breakfast apart – it’s the service. Guests are actually staying in a home versus a hotel, while still getting all of those amenities of a nice hotel – Wi-Fi, own bathroom, hairdryer, television – but on top of that there’s a much more personal touch.
“Staying in a B&B is just more personal,” says Clair. “It’s more of a one-on-one relationship between guests and owners of bed and breakfasts.”
So next time family or friends are in town be sure to have them stay at Clair’s B & B… “Your Spare Bedroom in Ladner”
